We hope you had a good holiday and welcome everyone back to the second half of the Spring Term. During the break there have been a number of physical improvements to the school building. The decorators were very busy giving Pier classroom a complete makeover. The classroom looks terrific with new carpet, heating, lighting, display boards and a fabulous purple feature wall. Pier classroom is the first room to be overhauled in an ongoing school building project.
During the holiday it seems that we also had an uninvited visitor to the Reception classroom. We returned to find bear paw prints, sticks and two dead salmon littered across the floor. The children are using their investigative skills to research in non-fiction books to find out what kind of bear might be on the loose. Please let us know if you have any ideas.
On Monday Year Two visited the Fire Station in Crawley and from their recounts it sounded like they had such an amazing time. They explained that they used a real hose to put out the burning Tudor houses that they had made for homework…”it was so heavy and strong it nearly knocked me over”. They saw firefighters sliding down the emergency pole as well as the whole class getting into the fire engine. Ms Rosen said that every single member of Year Two were beautifully behaved and a real credit to Deepdene.
We celebrated National Number Day today with maths featuring as the main focus of learning across the school. The Reception class played board games as well as going on a number hunt around the classroom, Year 2 were seen taking part in a bowling competition and adding up lots of scores. In Upper School lots of card games were being played including Uno. We finished the day with the annual inter House number competition. The children were such good sports cheering everyone on regardless of which House they were affiliated to.
We had so many wonderful Lion King Programme design entries it was very difficult for Mrs Slaymaker and Mrs Viney to choose a winner but they are in deep discussions about it.
Our library team ran a brilliant ‘Design a Comic’ Competition and the winner was announced in assembly. Lucianna Hutt designed a fantastic comic called ‘Food Pets’ and was our overall winner with the runner up being Bodee Georgiou with ‘The Battle of Doomster!’ – Well done! The library team used the money raised to buy the brand new Michael Morpurgo book, ‘Toto’.
Don’t forget World Book Day on Friday 6th March. We look forward to seeing the children in their costumes. A separate Parentmail will be sent with our exciting plans for the week.
We wish you a lovely weekend.
