Speech and Drama is a regular part of the curriculum from Early Years through to Year 6. Pupils have a dedicated lesson once a week, where they learn to develop self-expression, confidence and imagination.
Speech and Drama lessons are very popular with Deepdene pupils, they are encouraged to extend their self expression in communication, acquire dramatic skills, role play and to understand a wide variety of texts. The school has two lively drama clubs and theatre visits to the West End and Regional theatre are a highlight of the calendar.
From the earliest years, there are opportunities to participate in class plays, perform as part of Church services, or in fully staged plays. Older pupils tackle challenging dramatic projects with vigour, stretching their boundaries of imagination and physical expression, such as ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ performed at The Old Market Theatre Brighton as part of the Schools Shakespeare Festival.Commitment and professionalism are demanded for auditions and for the team work involved in preparing for productions. This year we are proud to announce we will be performing ‘Bugsy Malone’ at The Rialto Theatre, a professional theatre in the heart of Brighton City centre.
There are opportunities for pupils to take extracurricular acting lessons following LAMDA syllabi. Peripatetic lessons taught my the Head of Drama prepare pupils for LAMDA examinations, regularly achieving high results and enthusing the children with a true appreciation of poetry and acting. This year our students had an outstanding success, all achieving high merits and distinctions in their LAMDA grades.
